Things To Do in Elkton, MD
A town in and the county seat of Cecil County, MD, Elkton sits at the head of navigation of the Elk River. It was initially called Head of Elk for this reason. The Elk River flows into the nearby Chesapeake Bay. It was known as the Gretna Green of the East of the US because of the many eloping couples marrying there.
It was initially founded by Swedish mariners and fishermen from Fort Casimir, who settled in the area in 1694. This settlement was called Head of Elk. It saw several actions throughout the American Revolutionary War. In 1777, Sire William Howe’s Angle-German army (13,000 British soldiers and 5,000 Germans) landed on the Elk River and marched to Head of Elk, which led to the capture of Philadelphia. In 1781, the Marquis de Lafayette embarked his troops there to attempt to capture Benedict Arnold. The same year, George Washington and Rochambeau stopped there on their way to Yorktown.
The Milburn Orchards in the area have blueberries galore, making their premium blueberry ice cream in-house and various other blueberry products. The Fairhill Scottish Games also are a place to go, the grounds that they are on being a state recreational area with over 5,8000 acres of territory to do year-round. Could you check the calendar for events in that area? The Elkton Brewing Company features Imperial Stout, known as Beerocracy, one of the best stouts in Maryland.
