Things To Do in Ellicott City, MD

Things To Do

Ellicott City, an unincorporated community and the county seat of Howard County, MD, is a prominent part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. It holds the distinction of being the most populous unincorporated county seat in the United States.

Founded in 1766, the area was initially developed around a gristmill established by James Hood. He used the “Maryland Mill Act of 1669” to secure over 20 acres next to his riverfront property for milling operations on the Patapsco River. The site, strategically located at the crossing of what later became known as Frederick Road and eventually Maryland Route 144, was sold in 1774 to Joseph Ellicott, who, along with his brothers, expanded the settlement. The community, originally known as Ellicott’s Mills, grew into a major hub for manufacturing and milling in the region.

Today, Ellicott City is celebrated for its charming downtown area, officially known as the Ellicott City Historic District. Nestled in the valleys of the Patapsco and Tiber rivers, this district is home to the Ellicott City Station, the oldest remaining train station in the United States, built in 1830 as the original terminus of the B&O Railroad. The area, often referred to as “Historic Ellicott City” or “Old Ellicott City,” is distinct from the more modern suburbs that surround it.
